A few years ago, Time Out NY featured one of our Tribeca projects in their round up of envy-inducing rooftop decks. While the city is reopening, more time is being spent in our homes than ever, making it a great time to revisit the untapped potential of your rooftop deck, terrace, backyard, or building’s common roof. Click here to see many of the projects we’ve designed, installed, and maintained. Now’s the time to start the process of turning your outdoor space into your private escape.

It's Time to Design
While the city is paused, and physical work is not possible, it’s a great opportunity to utilize our designers for a new project or improvements to your existing garden. Evan and our design team are available to discuss ideas and our process, and to begin taking steps toward transforming and improving your outdoor space.
Whether it’s designing something from scratch, adding more planters, or adding a new element such as a fountain, these processes take time. By starting the process now, we’ll be that much closer to its completion when the city reopens and life gets back to normal. Click on the “Projects” tab below to see many of our previous designs and to learn more about each. You can reach our office by calling 212-496-2513 and pressing extension 1, or email evan@eclld.com.
Before and After: Bloomingdale School of Music - on NBC’s George to the Rescue April 11th at 9am/7pm EDT
This past fall, Evan C. Lai Landscape Design, Inc., as a part of NBC’s George to the Rescue and in partnership with SilverLining, Inc. and Rogers Partners Architects, re-designed the outdoor space for the Bloomingdale School of Music. Before the episode airs this Saturday, April 11th at 9am and 7pm EDT on NBC and YouTube, get a peak below at the transformation that took place.
Located on the Upper West Side, the school has been providing affordable music education since 1964 to children and seniors alike. They hoped their backyard could serve as an outdoor performance space, an event space for school fundraisers, as a place for students and staff to study, reflect, and relax, and as a memorial garden for the founder of the school. We had only five weeks to transform it from its original condition into a space that could serve all of the school’s needs.
We designed and built the outdoor space to be an extension of the newly-renovated interior performance space (designed by Rogers Partners Architects and implemented by SilverLining, Inc.). Using the interior colors and concept of a “piano/organ” as a theme, every element of the backyard is meant to evoke the ideas of music, creativity, and community.
The bluestone paving was designed to look like the keys of a piano. The fence was made to resemble a music staff with large notes starting on the fence and extending down into the gravel. A large mural bearing the school’s name covers the brick wall, and represents the spirit and mission of the school. Chaotic and abstract grey and black notes represent the sound of a beginner learning how to play an instrument, but as the notes become more orderly, and the mural more colorful, one senses that with practice and hard work, beautiful music and a more defined and confident individual can emerge.
Finally, the space honors the school’s founder, David Greer, an organist who wanted to give the gift of music to anyone regardless of their financial background. To memorialize him, we placed his urn under the "G key” on the bluestone “piano” and a memorial plaque was placed in the raised planting bed full of hostas and ferns.
Many thanks for donations of materials from 40 Visuals, SiteOne Landscape Supply, and Hicks Nurseries, Inc. that helped make this project possible!

ECLLD to be Featured on NBC's George to the Rescue This Spring!
We are very excited to announce that we have recently completed a pro bono project for the upcoming season of NBC’s TV series, George to the Rescue! Working in concert with high-end general contractors, Silver Lining, Inc., we revitalized the back courtyard area of the Bloomingdale School of Music, an historic part of Harlem in NYC that offers free music lessons to children and adults of all ages and backgrounds.
The press was given a sneak peak of the finished renovation, so you can head to the West Side Rag and I Love the Upper West Side sites for a glimpse, and can see the full process and reveal this spring on George to the Rescue!
The Bloomingdale School of Music was founded in 1964 with the core mission to provide access to music-education to all who are interested. The school provides financial aid and flexibility to facilitate that goal. The school is open to the public during “sharing hours” when informal recitals take place by students of all ages and skill levels. The much-needed interior and exterior upgrades will provide these students with tremendous environments to learn and perform.
This effort was made possible by many vendors who donated materials for the courtyard renovation, including: SiteOne Landscape Supply, Hicks Nurseries, Inc., and 40 Visuals.
Tune in when George to the Rescue airs this spring to see how the transformation took place, and what the final product looks like!
West Village Residential Project: Before and After Video
We're excited to present this "Before and After" video for our West Village Residential Project that was completed in 2017. In this short two-minute video, you'll see the ~2500 sq. ft. terrace transformed from a blank canvas to a lush and multi-functional garden.
